When I was growing up, rummage sales were dark and gloomy with only clutter, stigma and embarrassment. They were a place where I obscured my face as my nan dragged me in, seriously anxious that none of my school friends would see me.
I did though, once safely inside, love rooting around for second hand stuff, or browsing for girly skirts in their second hand kids clothes section – just so long as it was kept on the quiet.
Today I’m glad to say, it’s totally different. Preloved shopping is cool, pleasant and exciting – with things like vintage fairs and nearly new sales, second hand shopping has never been so popular. Today, when they find a fabulous piece of vintage designer clothing, folks are generally now pleased to say of course it’s a Period Classic, or I found it in this Gorgeous little secondhand shop for quite a bargain – I got it for a few pounds!
The make it yourself culture is booming – it has survived the recession, and we all still love getting down to some cookie making and decoupage. For mums to be, gear from a nearly new baby sale stall are a vital part of their kids repertoire.
The Bad Old Days Are Behind Us And Nearly New Is Shiny
Now, it’s the switched on mammas that are getting on board. The second hand toys scene has boomed, and I’m not that astonished. The fun factor of purchasing top notch children’s books for a fraction of the full cost is a no brainer for most parents.
Helen, a parent of two boys says “I frequently drive along to the regular baby nearly new sale, as I can pick up some cheap items for both my children and it costs heaps less than it would anywhere else. I personally love going to the designer nearly new baby sale round the corner from me, and often pick up some spotless second hand kids clothes for pennies”.
Getting your old children’s bits and bobs sold is always satisfying. So if you are ever in London, do look around at quality second hand baby goods stalls. Be told in advance though – the more you visit, the more engaging these events become!
